Male Breast Reduction

All men have some amount of normally occurring breast tissue. Occasionally, this tissue can enlarge to a point that is distressing to the patient. This condition, called gynecomastia, typically arises during puberty and is often a normal, self-limited process (i.e. it resolves on its own). In some men, this enlarged tissue persists into early adulthood. Other men may experience this excess breast tissue growth secondary to prescription medication, steroid use, marijuana consumption, or weight gain. Male breast reduction from our experienced plastic surgeons here at The Ottawa Clinic is a procedure that can be very effective at correcting gynecomastia and help men achieve a tighter, flatter appearance to the chest.

The Male Breast Reduction Procedure

Male breast reduction surgery usually involves a combination of chest liposuction (through a small incision below the chest crease) and an incision around the nipple (areola) to remove the excess gland tissue. When there is more significant excess skin, larger incisions may be required to remove it and achieve a more natural male contour. Male breast reduction is typically an outpatient procedure and is performed at one of our fully accredited hospitals.

Male Breast Reduction Recovery

You may experience some swelling for several weeks following the breast reduction surgery, but this is normal. Patients should wear a compression vest to control swelling for the first few weeks. Our doctors also recommend that you avoid any heavy lifting or other strenuous activities until you have had the chance to fully heal.

Male Breast Reduction Cost

Gynecomastia surgery typically has a cost of $9,000 or higher. This total will vary according to each patient and their unique needs.
