Breast Reduction

Breast reduction can be beneficial for women who have symptoms related to breasts that are too large and heavy for their bodies. Symptoms can include neck and back pain, grooves in the shoulders from bra straps, and rashes underneath the fold of the breasts. Some women are also troubled by a limited ability to exercise or difficulty finding bras and clothing that fit.

By removing excess fat and/or tissue and then recontouring the breasts, patients can achieve a beautiful, balanced appearance without the discomfort and self-consciousness associated with overly large breasts. When you meet with one of our experienced plastic surgeons, you will learn how breast reduction surgery may be able to address your concerns and help you reach your aesthetic goals.

The Breast Reduction Procedure

Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anaesthesia at one of our fully accredited hospitals. Depending on the amount of tissue to be removed and the quality of breast skin, incisions will typically be placed around the nipple (areola) or within the crease under the breasts. Our plastic surgeon will work diligently to make any residual scarring as light as possible. Once excess skin and/or fat has been removed, the nipples are lifted and the breasts are re-contoured. The result should be a renewed size and shape to the breasts that is more proportionate to your body frame.

In some cases, breast reduction can be achieved through liposuction alone. One of our plastic surgeons will discuss all aspects of the procedure with you and help you decide the best option for your needs.

Breast Reduction Recovery

Most patients can be discharged later in the day following their surgery. It is normal to experience some swelling and bruising after the procedure, but this should fade with time as the breasts continue to heal. Since breast reduction surgery can affect a woman’s ability to breastfeed, you should discuss this with your doctor if you plan to become pregnant in the future.
