Hyperhidrosis Treatment

What Is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is a condition characterized by overactive sweat glands. While the main purpose of sweat is to help regulate body temperature, people suffering from hyperhidrosis sweat more than necessary to achieve the same cooling effect. The condition tends to affect areas of the body with a high concentration of sweat glands, including the palms of the hands, feet, and underarms. These symptoms are associated with primary hyperhidrosis, which is sometimes referred to as focal hyperhidrosis. Some patients may experience excessive sweating all over the body (secondary hyperhidrosis), and this symptom may indicate a more significant medical condition or illness. With BOTOX® injections, our plastic surgeons are able to treat the symptoms of primary focal hyperhidrosis for an improved quality of life.

What Causes Hyperhidrosis?

While the exact cause of hyperhidrosis is unknown, the condition is considered an inherited problem that typically begins to manifest during childhood. In many cases, overactive nerves overstimulate the sweat glands, leading to excessive perspiration. Although primary focal hyperhidrosis is not harmful to your health, the condition can negatively impact a person’s quality of life. Men and women with hyperhidrosis may experience stress, embarrassment, or frustration because of excessive sweating leading to concerns like sweat stains, odor, and sweaty palms. People with hyperhidrosis may feel especially self-conscious at work or during other social situations.

BOTOX® for Hyperhidrosis Treatment

Periodic BOTOX® injections can stop excess sweating by temporarily blocking the neural pathways that communicate with the sweat glands. This treatment can effectively prevent sweat production at the target area and can be administered to areas such as the underarms, forehead, hands, or feet. The treatment of hyperhidrosis in the underarms with BOTOX® is approved by the FDA. Many patients who opt for hyperhidrosis treatment with BOTOX® have tried prescription-strength antiperspirants without success.

Prior to injection, a numbing agent can be applied to the treatment area to maximize your comfort. The total number of injections will vary depending upon the size of the treatment area and the severity of your condition. The treatment can usually be completed in 30 minutes, and most patients return to their normal daily activities immediately afterward.

How Long Do BOTOX® Results Last for Hyperhidrosis?

Patients may need to wait up to one week to notice the full effects of the BOTOX® injections. The results typically last about six months. Patients can easily schedule twice-yearly appointments to enjoy year-round relief from hyperhidrosis.
