New Year, New You: Cosmetic Surgery Ideas to Kickstart 2017!

Every New Year, thousands of women across Ottawa commit to living a healthier lifestyle, losing weight or quitting a bad habit. Now is the perfect time to get a head start on 2017! “We always notice an uptick in patients who visit for a little BOTOX® Cosmetic around the eyes, a bit of contouring around the waist at the beginning of every year. There’s no shame in wanting to look your best,” says Dr. Trefor Nodwell, board-certified plastic surgeon and co-founder of The Ottawa Clinic.

Here are a few ways to bring in a New Year, and a new you.

Icon Hair Removal: Get swimsuit ready

Instead of forgoing a sunny vacation in the dead of winter, stick to your resolution and take care of yourself! “We’ve just received the Icon machine at the Clinic! Patients can remove and minimize the growth of unwanted hair, improve the look of stretch marks and scarring, help reduce wrinkles and much more!” says Dr. Nodwell. Just in time for a sunny vacation, no?

CoolSculpting®: Get rid of stubborn weight

Nearly 40 per cent of women listed losing weight as their top New Year’s resolution of 2016. However, that last bit of stubborn fat around the waist, arms, thighs and chin can be surprisingly immune to your weekly yoga class or daily run. Luckily, CoolSculpting®, a non-surgical body contouring technique, can help. “CoolSculpting® freezes fat cells in troubled areas and breaks them down through the body,” explains Dr. Nodwell. “Patients often begin to see results six to eight weeks after treatment.”

Fraxel®: Undo damage from bad habits

Everyone has a bad habit, from sun tanning or smoking cigarettes. In 2016, more than 40 per cent of women tried to kick their bad habits, live healthier lifestyles and undo some of the damage. “Patients often opt for Fraxel®, a laser treatment which treats skin imperfections such as fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation and scarring to restore their skin’s natural beauty,” explains Dr. Nodwell. The extent of skin resurfacing needed will determine how many treatments are required, but most patients see significant results after two to three sessions.

Spending time with loved ones

In 2016, more than 30 per cent of women committed to spending more time with loved ones as a New Year’s resolution. That’s a lot of love and family selfies! Patients whose lips thin out as they age, or those who were born with a less voluminous pout, often opt for a lip augmentation. “The procedure gives patients more confidence in their smile. We use dermal fillers such as Restylane® or JUVÉDERM® VOLBELLA®, or fat injections from a graft taken from another area of the body,” says Dr. Nodwell. While slight bruising and swelling may occur, recovery is often less than one week.
